JEAN-BAPTISTE JOLY

PAPER MODEL WITH CARTOON DRAWINGS, 2022

Like on every proper steamer, we also had a stowaway. Or rather two: Tintin and Snowy built themselves a small cabin and embarked inconspicuously. Welcome aboard, you two!
PS: We don’t know yet what Tintin will find in the treasure chest. Maybe some of Jean-Baptiste’s drawing booklets …

Jean-Baptiste Joly (Berlin) is a French Germanist, curator and cultural manager. He directed the Akademie Schloss Solitude from 1989 to 2018 and teaches as an honorary professor of theory and history at the Weißensee Academy of Art in Berlin. As a fan, Joly took over from Hergé – the illustrator of Tintin, pronounced R. G., whose real name was Georges Remi – his phonetic play with letters: For his artistic works, Joly used the pseudonym K. L. Jenny. “Quel génie” – what a genius.

Dear Jean-Baptiste, your collection of French exercise books, which you have been filling with drawings on certain themes for decades, is gigantic by now. You impressed me a lot with it when we met first over twenty years ago. Yours Dominik
