ASSEMBLAGE WITH CHRISTMAS TREE MINIATURE, 2021 The ASSEMBLAGE WITH CHRISTMAS TREE MINIATURE, 2021
The tree arrived a few days before Christmas, really very well protected in its open-topped dwelling, like in a concrete wall with shards of glass inserted, against trespassing, forbidden access – or to prevent escape? The sharp pointed spikes shine very nicely. The little tree with a small golden tip and tree decoration is dusted with shimmering powdered sugar. With a strip of felt, the walled-in little tree can be carefully lifted out of the box, which is lined with grey felt.
The small installation challenged the various interpretations. Not only because it was the second year that Christmas was celebrated under very strange circumstances. At the same time we enjoyed Helen’s documentation of the manufacturing steps. In this way, she gave us a little insight into her work and let us share in it.

Valentin Lindau & Jonas Schneider (Berlin/Germany) Valentin Lindau & Jonas Schneider (Berlin/Germany) are product and interaction designers. The name of her studio – hint – stands for human interaction design. Don’t be afraid of autonomous systems: If you want to know exactly what a cobot is, what robots could learn from humans, how complex processes can be made more understandable and what digital services could do for us, you can find out at studio hint. Of course, they can also develop “real” products.

INTERACTIVE OBJECT, 2021 Enlightened by touch. You INTERACTIVE OBJECT, 2021
Enlightened by touch. You need at least two hands. Immediate, simultaneous contact. When three pairs of hands meet in an artistic interplay, the box not only shimmers brightly, but in a play of colours. The white box within the box was created using 3D printing and has a tricky interior that allows people and lighting technology to interact.

* ‘Dreimalzwei’ (Thricetwo) relates to the three pairs of hands and to ‘Zweineins’ (Twoinone), the title of the first semester project that I had taught at the beginning of Jonas’ and Valentin’s studies. / Dominik Harborth

PAPER CUT, 2021 The black ribbon of finely cut car PAPER CUT, 2021
The black ribbon of finely cut cardboard that unrolls out of the box gets longer and longer. Like Little Red Riding Hood in the dark forest, you slowly and little by little discover what is growing there and who is hanging around. They emerge from the tangle of fine passages, slits and openings, the creatures of the forest and old fairytale books: fox, mouse and rabbit, mushrooms, woodpecker and owl, crocodile and little dwarf in the thicket. A touching mix of magical images, admiration of nature and sometimes spooky childhood dreams.

ASSEMBLAGE AND MINIATURE BOOK, 2021 “An interpla ASSEMBLAGE AND MINIATURE BOOK, 2021
“An interplay of a thousand parts made of wood, leather, glue and metal, allowing the wind to find its way and create a variety of soundscapes …“ Sophie Alex / November 17, 2021

An organ for Alt-Pankow – that was Sophie’s motto for the last two years: researching, planning, making contacts, supporting the fundraising, drawing designs for the organ prospectus, communicating with church management, preservationists, organ builders and many other partners – all this under pandemic conditions. She has captured the entire process between two book covers. Scaled down, she has packed this commemorative publication in her box. The regular benefit concerts and events around the newly built organ in the style of Carl August Buchholz – called “the Schinkel of the organ”, by the way – continue to be an integral part of her everyday life.

Xinyu Weng (Berlin/Germany) is a product designer Xinyu Weng (Berlin/Germany) is a product designer with a Chinese background. He studied at the Bauhaus University Weimar and founded the YUUE design studio in Berlin with his partner Haiyue Tao in 2015, which he has run alone since 2018. He designs luminaires, furniture and accessories for the kitchen, desk and household. The somewhat different view he takes of everyday things often leads to very unusual forms and re-design concepts.

Haiyue Tao (Berlin/Germany and Hangzhou/China) stu Haiyue Tao (Berlin/Germany and Hangzhou/China) studied product design at Bauhaus University Weimar. Together with Xinyu Weng, they co-founded YUUE Design in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. In 2015 she established MÍN Berlin – a concept store, agency and distributor to make European avant-garde design better known in China; so an office in Hangzhou followed. But vice versa she also took care of the reverse direction: During Corona, she set up the web shop NormalNormal, where she offers everyday things and design objects from Asia in the Berlin design scene.

OBJECT, 2021 “It is a piece installation in the OBJECT, 2021
“It is a piece installation in the shape of virus that reflects viewers. The message at the center ‘Humans are a virus’, seems to awaken viewers to the present moment and question themself.” Haiyue Tao

It looks decorative and arouses curiosity. The contour seems familiar; and the engraved writing confirms that the little shiny metal thing must be a “pandemic souvenir”. The short phrase reminds us of something that has been much discussed and even more fiercely argued about for a good two years now and which is still ongoing. Not to speak of the consequences everywhere and in all areas of life. Sometimes an evolutionary holistic perspective helps, but sometimes an object with a subtle sense of humor like this one is also needed – or both in one.

“Every mammal on this planet, instinctively develops a nature equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed, and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague.” Agent Smith, The Matrix / 1999

LIDDED VESSEL, 2021 If you trace the origin of the LIDDED VESSEL, 2021
If you trace the origin of the ancient Greek πυξίς – pyxis – you not only learn that it is a round vessel. But also that the words for box tree and – lo and behold – “box” are derived from this.
The ancient pyxids were often turned from boxwood, but there were also examples made of other materials: ivory, metal, alabaster, ceramics. It can be said that pyxides have arrived in the 21st century with this example printed in porcelain!
This type of lidded vessel has another significance as a ritual or medicinal device – for smoking and preserving scents and vapours. The mould inlaid inside “Pyxis” tells about it. I ask myself which scent I would preserve for these times.

BOOKLET SERIES, MAY TO SEPTEMBER 2021 “When I st BOOKLET SERIES, MAY TO SEPTEMBER 2021
“When I started this project on May 30th, 2021, I was very optimistic about creating one book per week. The reality was different. As usual, the (always more urgent) daily work crept into my schedule. Some weeks passed without me touching this project. Every time I postponed the project, I felt guilty, I felt like a student again needing to deliver some work until a given deadline. … In conclusion, I can say that ‘the path become the goal’. It was not about creating a series of 15 perfect books but rather about developing ideas within a limited time and drawing attention to my surroundings as a potential source of inspiration. It reminded me to take time for my projects.” Mariko Takagi, Living in a box 15 / September 18, 2021

“Dear Silke, the 15 booklets took more time than I first thought. Now I think it’s a little travel library that came about at a time when I wasn’t travelling. I hope the work gets to you undamaged.” Mariko Takagi / October 21, 2021
